Happy Birthday to You!
Nine years ago God graced our lives with the wonderful gift of you.
You came as a little bitty baby, weak, needy and cute as-a-button. Now you are a certified Man-in-Training.
Today I was reminded of how quickly manhood is approaching. In the car, when we passed the billboard with a woman dressed (or not dressed!) immodestly, I watched you turn your head 180 degrees the other way and find something distracting to talk about. I was so PROUD of you — you have learned well from your father. I am so happy that your daddy is training you to act like a Real Man already, a few years before these things become real temptations for you. I just know you will continue to grow into the kind of man daddy is, a man that seeks to protect his heart from things that could harm him (“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a woman” Job 31:1).
I cannot tell you how blessed I am to be married to a man like your dad, and how wonderful it is to have not one, not two, but THREE sons walking in your dad’s footsteps.
And, you, being our firstborn — you bring me honor, son!
Did you know that God has a special interest in the “firsts” of everything? It is true. From scripture, and from practical experience, it seems to me that God tends to use firstborn children in a unique and enthusiastic way. I hope and pray this will be true for you. You are already such a vision-setter for those little brothers of yours who think you are nothing-short-of-amazing, and I hope you will be a leader to them in things of God.
I see the passion for LIFE in your eyes and your voice and the way that you play hard with all your strength! I pray that as you grow closer to manhood that God will continue to plant within you a strong desire and a bubbling excitement for Him and His ways…
I pray that as you play football and learn to serve your brothers unselfishly and make friends and practice honoring your parents and grow in areas of mathematics and science and grammar and learn how to mow the lawn and fix the car and become an expert at Photoshop and video-editing and practice keeping promises —
I pray that in all these things you will do this year, that you will learn to serve God wholeheartedly.
I cannot wait to see what God does in your wonderful life this year, your last year of single digits!
Happy Birthday, Son. I love you.
